The director of Houston’s Solid Waste Management Department has reportedly floated the notion of a monthly trash and recycling service charge to help fund additional recycling collection efforts.

An online report from KPRC Channel 2 in Houston quotes city of Houston Solid Waste Director Harry Hayes as saying Houston is “the only big Texas city that doesn’t have a fee like this” to fund services.

The report says a $15-to-$20 surcharge would help cover expenses related to both recycling and trash collection, including funding a more severe crackdown on illegal dumping.

Hayes told the TV station the monthly fee could be added to municipal water bills and could lead to a doubling of the number of neighborhood solid waste and recycling collection centers in Houston.

Such dropoff sites are free to homeowners, although business owners are charged as much as $50 to drop off tree trimmings, scrap tires and other discarded materials generated by business activity, according to Channel 2.
