KW Plastics, Troy, Alabama, says it has received a second nonobjection letter (NOL) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center of Food Safety and Applied Nutrition for KWR621 FDA, which is a recycled food-grade polypropylene (PP) product approved for levels of up to 100-percent-recycled content.

The letter expands FDA’s nonobjections to produce a postconsumer resin suitable for use in the fabrication of disposable food service items, under Conditions of Use C-G.

In addition to reusable food-contact crates and pallets, appropriate applications for KWR621 FDA include disposable cutlery, soup containers and hot and cold drink cups.

“We are excited about the FDA’s decision to expand the conditions and the expanded opportunities this will bring our customers,” says Scott Saunders, general manager of KW Plastics’ recycling division.

“The demand for food grade PCR (postconsumer recycled) is growing each day,” says Saunders. “What may have seemed impossible a few years ago is a reality today. Achieving our second FDA NOL within 12 months is a testament to the investment and research KW Plastics commits to growing our industry.”
