The Washington State Recycling Association (WSRA) is presenting a workshop called “Public and Private Partnerships: Success in Skagit County,” which will take place Thursday, Sept. 17, at the Burlington, Washington, city hall council chambers.

The event has been designed to provide insight into how public-private partnerships within the recycling industry can “result in thriving businesses and communities,” according to the WSRA. Participants will explore ways in which local and regional governments interconnect with private industry to successfully and consistently divert materials from being landfilled.

“We are excited to be highlighting the collaborations taking place in Skagit County,” says Anne Baunach, executive director of WSRA. “The work being done there is a model that others can learn from as to how public and private entities can successfully work together in the recycling industry. Seeing this partnership in action as well as hearing from other industry experts will make for a motivating and educational day.”

Topics covered include construction and demolition (C&D) recycling and green building as well as the role of nationally certified recycling facilities. Product quality will be addressed by paper mill operator Port Townsend Paper.

Attendees will also hear about the planning and development of the solid waste system in Skagit County, which “created a hub of recycling activities all in one convenient location,” according to WSRA.

Tours of the Lautenbach Industries C&D materials recovery facility and Skagit County’s newly remodeled transfer and recycling station will follow morning presentations. Lautenbach Industries, along with Republic Services, is one of the sponsors of the event.

Registration costs are as follows: WSRA members $65; nonmembers $85; and students with a valid student ID $35. The workshop starts with coffee and networking at 8:45 a.m. and then runs from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Those seeking more information or to register for the event can go to www.wsra.net or call the WSRA office at 206-244-0311.
